How To Make An Egg Float

Procedure Text

How To Make An Egg Float

An egg sinks to the bottom if you drop it into a glass of ordinary drinking water but what happens if you add salt? The results are very interesting and can teach you some fun facts about density.

Purpose  :
To prove that the density of salt water is lower than the water so that the egg can float and to determine the freshness of eggs, because a fresh egg will sink in fresh water but it will float in salty water. A rotten egg will float in fresh water.

Materials  :
1.      Egg
2.      4 tablespoon of Salt
3.      Water
4.      3 of Glass
5.      Spoon

Steps :
1. First, pour water into the glass until it is about half full.
2. Second, fill glass with 4 tablespoon of salt, and stir the water to help the salt dissolve.
3. After that, choose a raw, uncooked egg with no visible cracks in the shell. Place the egg gently into the water.
4. Next, carefully pour in plain water until the glass is nearly full (be careful to not disturb or mix the salty water with the plain water).
 5. Finally, watch as the egg what happens. (egg floats in the center of glass.!!)
What's happening?
Adding salt to the water puts more molecules into the water to make it denser. The more salt you add make the more dense the water becomes until it finally becomes denser than the egg. This makes the egg float.
